This past weekend, I had the honor and pleasure of attending my 25-Year Class Reunion for my high school (
Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur, Texas). I really enjoyed attending this event, as well as seeing my classmates from my graduating class. It was really an…

The Value Of A Gym Locker
One aspect of personal safety and security that has relevance for many of us involves safeguarding our belongings. Losing personal belongings can be stressful, but losing them due to theft can be even more aggravating. To avoid feeling these negative emotions, it is important to take steps to secure them when you have the opportunity to do so.
One situation where I find it necessary to secure my belongings occurs when I visit the gym for a workout. Becau…

As some readers may be aware, I have been participating in the Biggest Loser contest at the police department since January of this year. Throughout the last several months, I have continued my exercises to see if I could lose additional pounds, and perhaps gain the cash prize from the contest. I did not win the contest nor lose any pounds during these months, but I did enjoy the experience. It was a worthwhile endeavor.
During these months following our initial weigh-ins, my weight tended to f…

As of July 13, 2009, Yahoo 360 is in the process of shutting down the site. The staff at Yahoo is creating a new page for its members, but I’m not sure if I will go through the process of setting up a new page, primarily due to time factors. Since setting up my page on Yahoo 360, I have also set up pages on MySpace, Facebook, and three pages on Ning.com (two for my high school, and one for my college). Yahoo 360 was the first page I set up, so I wanted to write today’s blog to reflect on the sit…

Challenging Your Workouts
I have gotten back into physical fitness over the last few years, and I really believe that I have been getting good results from my efforts. At first these exercises may have been more difficult for me, but over time, I have been improving my overall condition. One aspect to which I owe these results has been from adding challenges to my workouts.
On the physical level, adding challenges to your workouts may be obvious. Adding challenges can come from increasi…

I recently made my annual trip to Louisiana, Missouri for a family reunion, and I had a really great time. For those of you who are not familiar with this town, it is located along the Mississippi River approximately two hours north of St. Louis, and a half hour south of Hannibal. It’s a fairly small town, but it’s a nice community. This is my mother’s home town, and my family meets there for our family reunion because it’s centrally located for everyone. Apart from those who live locally or nea…

I was having a conversation with a friend of mine when he threw in one of the best sentences I have heard in a long time. He said, "Worrying is for victims." That sentence was very relevant to our conversation and I have been thinking about it a lot ever since.
He meant, from a business stan…

Summoning Emergency Assistance
This is the first of a series of blogs designed to provide information geared toward enhancing your personal safety. An area I wanted to discuss today involves the summoning of emergency assistance.
As a dispatcher, I handle thousands of calls every year, and something I’ve determined throughout my career is that there are many people who aren’t familiar with the process of contacting Emergency Services, and this can complicate matters for the dispatcher w…

I completed another session of
Practical Problems for my department today, and it provided another successful training opportunity. Some readers may recall my explanation of Practical Problems from a blog I wrote last year titled
Virgin Class, which you’re welcome to read if you haven’t already. For the benefit of those readers who are not familiar with this training approach, it is used in many police departments to train rookie patrol officers by providing mock scenarios d…

Today is Thanksgiving. This is one holiday I enjoy because I respect its premise. In short, today is a day designated to give thanks for the benefits we enjoy in our lives. It is especially important that we consider these benefits because there are many people who aren't as fortunate as us, so we shouldn't take these benefits for granted. I have many benefits in my life for which I'm thankful, and it would be difficult to sufficiently express how much these benefits mean to me in the confines o…

I recently added an interest to my Yahoo 360 page showing that I liked collecting patriotic items. It seems that American patriotism has increased quite a bit since 9/11, and we are seeing a number of patriotic displays as a result. I view many of these items as pure artwork, and I enjoy seeing the creativity of people in expressing their patriotism. I have collected many online photos of these items, and I've even photographed many of them myself.
One idea that I was going to work on sometime…

I got some good news today. I was glancing at
The Weather Channel's website, and it looks like Tropical Storm Chris may be weakening. For a moment, it looked like we were in its path. I know many of us in this area are still recovering from Hurricane Rita last year, so it's a relief to know that we will probably not be getting any more storms just yet. One thing that I hate about working for a police department close to the beach is that every time a storm enters the Gulf of Mexico…

Early this morning, this area was hit by Hurricane Humberto. The hurricane made landfall around High Island, which is located approximately 50 miles from where I live, between here and Galveston. We got a lot of rain and wind, and we lost power for approximately 10-11 hours. We had several downed limbs in the yard, and fortunately that was the extent of our damage. I believe it was upgraded from a tropical storm to a Category 1 Hurricane by the time it made landfall. It could have been much wors…

Many of us on Myspace receive invitations from several people requesting to join our lists of friends. When I first joined, I received many invitations from people, some of whom I didn't know personally. An approach I took in response was to send an e-mail requesting that the person tell me a little bit about himself or herself, if he or she didn't send one along with the invitation in the first place. I wrote a blog discussing this e-mail several months ago, and I recently wrote a blog discussi…
