The Value Of A Gym Locker

One aspect of personal safety and security that has relevance for many of us involves safeguarding our belongings. Losing personal belongings can be stressful, but losing them due to theft can be even more aggravating. To avoid feeling these negative emotions, it is important to take steps to secure them when you have the opportunity to do so.

One situation where I find it necessary to secure my belongings occurs when I visit the gym for a workout. Because I will be temporarily separated from certain belongings while I’m exercising, I want to feel secure in knowing that I’ve taken the necessary steps to safeguard them. This is where using the lockers provided by the gym can prove invaluable.

Often when I go to the gym, I see some people treating their belongings with reckless abandon. I have to admit that I cringe when I see these practices. Much of it may be due to a lack of foresight on their part, while others may believe that they will not be victimized in a familiar place regardless of their actions, but this inattention could provide an opportunity for a theft to occur. It should be noted that many crimes occur simply because the perpetrator to commit them, and thinking ahead and taking the appropriate steps can often provide a strong deterrent in itself.

An area I strongly advise against using is the key-pegboard offered by many gyms. In these gyms, patrons can hang their car keys on the pegs while they’re exercising. A problem with this approach is that you will undoubtedly be away from the board, as well as focused on your workout. In addition, gym employees and/or other patrons may not be able to keep a constant watch over the board during this time. Taking this approach can increase your risk of having your vehicle stolen or burglarized. This is especially true if you use a keyless entry device for your car, as some cases have involved people stealing the keys, followed by pushing the entry button to determine the vehicle associated the keys. Further problems that can arise from this type of situation are that the perpetrator can get access to your personal information, as well as your home if your house key is on the same ring. Thus it is best to keep your keys secured in a locker, or at least in your pocket, while you’re exercising.

Most gyms offer lockers for their patrons to use while they’re exercising. In some gyms lockers are assigned to particular members as part of their membership dues, while other gyms may allow their lockers to be used by patrons only during their workouts. In any case, it is imperative that you use the lockers correctly to secure your belongings. To begin with, you should store items in the locker during your workout rather than leaving them laying around the locker room. In addition, when you store your items in the locker, it is important to secure it with a lock. Although these practices may seem fairly obvious, there are many people who take their importance for granted.

Just as certain workout gear can be beneficial to a gym patron’s fitness level, a lock used on a locker can prove invaluable toward protecting his or her property. Depending on your preferences, you can use either a padlock or a combination lock. I recommend the combination lock to avoid the hassle of a lost key to the lock; however, you remember your combination if you choose the combination lock to avoid that hassle too.

I focused on the gym environment in this blog, but these principles can be applied to other areas where you can use lockers to secure belongings, such as the workplace or a school. Although theft can still occur despite taking precautions, taking these precautions can minimize your risk of being victimized. After all, you often arrive at the gym with various items of value (e.g. wallet, keys, cell phone), and taking steps to secure your belongings in a locker can help ensure that you leave with them too.
